Have the media grown too close to power and too detached from the communities they serve? Claims that the ‘mainstream media’ have helped governments strengthen official policy on important political and social issues are growing. And audiences increasingly feel that their interests are unrepresented in the press, allowing populist politicians to incite anger against quality media and further undermine journalistic credibility when it is needed most.

She has worked at the Washington Post, Dallas Morning News and Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, where her debut column calling for a museum to honour native son Muhammad Ali helped spur an $80 million campaign to build the Muhammad Ali Center. Her columns about the fall of former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick were part of the entry that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting. She joined the faculty at Missouri in 2002 after a distinguished 30-year career in the news industry.
